Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat Katha & Vidhi
The most sacred and powerful of all 24 Ekadashis — observed without water for supreme spiritual merit and Vishnu grace.
Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat Katha & Vidhi
Mythological Story
According to the Mahabharata, Bhima was unable to observe the twice-monthly Ekadashi fasts due to his voracious hunger (Vrikodara). Maharshi Ved Vyasa advised Bhima to observe just one single fast on Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi without even a drop of water (Nirjala). By observing this single strenuous fast, Bhima earned the spiritual fruit of all twenty-four Ekadashis of the entire year.
Spiritual Significance
Nirjala Ekadashi cleanses severe karmic sins, grants long life, brings health, and opens the doorway to Lord Vishnu's supreme abode (Vaikuntha Dham).
Puja Vidhi & Celebration
Devotees fast from sunrise on Ekadashi until sunrise on Dwadashi without drinking water. Water pots, fans, seasonal fruits (mangoes, melons), and grains are donated to the poor and Brahmins.
